Brief History of Dallmayr

In 1933, young coffee merchant Konrad Werner Wille arrived in Munich from Bremen with the task of establishing a specialty coffee department at the Dallmayr delicatessen. Under the motto “Bremen’s art of blending meets southern Germany’s love for coffee”, he developed a premium coffee range. He bought green beans, operated the roasting machine himself, and organized sales. He created his own blends and supplied leading cafés and hotels. The Dallmayr Kaffee brand was born, spreading the fame of this exclusive delicatessen.

World War II was a dark chapter for the company. The headquarters on Dienerstraße was completely destroyed in 1945. Coffee — which had become the economic backbone of the business — was only available on the black market. The reconstruction of the house and its artistic façade was completed in the early 1950s, and Dallmayr began to rebuild its renown.

In the post-war years, coffee sales flourished. By the early 1960s, Dallmayr opened the largest and most modern coffee roasting facility in southern Germany, located in the Giesing district of Munich. The Dallmayr Kaffee brand became well-known throughout Bavaria, especially for the rapidly spreading specialty prodomo (“for one’s own home”), which Wille developed at that time.

In 1985, the coffee division was spun off into a newly established company — Alois Dallmayr Kaffee OHG. Within a short time, the goal of expanding roasted coffee sales beyond Bavaria was achieved. Today, Dallmayr, with its premium brand prodomo, ranks among the leading coffee brands on the German market.
